When “Just a Phase” Becomes Too Much

Burn-On: The silent stage before Burnout

Yesterday, a young lady asked me in my ‘Be Relaxed’ class:

“I don’t know what to do anymore. I’m having exams and I’m totally stressed out – to the point of complete spiraling!”

And while I gave her some tips, I know she’s not alone. 
Be honest:

If overthinking were a sport, would you have won Olympic Gold by now?

So let me ask you this:

Have you heard about the 5 stages of stress?

  1. Bore-out
  2. Mild stress
  3. High stress
  4. Burn-on
  5. Burnout

Now let’s reflect a little deeper.

  • “It’s just a phase.”
  • “I can handle this. I always do.”
  • “I’m just a bit off balance at the moment.”

But underneath that brave face, there might be this quiet voice whispering:

  • Something’s not right.

What if the problem isn’t due to stress, but a constant betrayal of your own boundaries? A lack of self-love and too little self-care?!

→ The truth is, many people live in a constant state of ‘burn-on’. The silent stage right before burnout.

That space where you’re not totally collapsed (yet), but every day costs you more energy just to keep going. You may not even notice it. Since it’s gradual, it becomes your “new normal.”

Yes, fatigue can come from things like blood sugar crashes, poor sleep, or anxious thoughts… But often, it runs deeper. Your fatigue might signal a DISCONNECTION – from your body, your limits, your boundaries, your passions, your purpose.

We tend to link burnout with:

  • A toxic work culture
  • A dysregulated nervous system
  • A life full of busyness, sadly somehow empty of meaning… leaving many people emotionally numb. But Burnout comes in many faces.

Underneath it all, you’ll often find:

  • Self-doubt
  • Loss of direction
  • Unmet emotional needs

And to be honest: Low self-worth, as well as the difficulty to say ‘NO’

Close your eyes

  • Inhale deeply through your nose for 4
  • Hold the breath for 6
  • Exhale through your mouth for 8

Draw your navel toward your spine – exhale even more! Exhale, exhale, exhale…
Repeat 3 times.

Notice how you feel afterwards. This is not just “breathing” – it’s a micro reset for your nervous system. A signal to your body that you’re safe.

Tiny habits like this can shift everything. But only if you let them.
